Pop Art Proposal

Pop Art
Andy Warhol is the person who first created Pop Art, first using newspaper and comic strips to make his Pop Art.

"After establishing himself as an acclaimed graphic artist, Warhol turned to painting and drawing in the 1950s, and in 1952 he had his first solo exhibition at the Hugo Gallery, with Fifteen Drawings Based on the Writings of Truman Capote. As he matured, his paintings incorporated photo-based techniques he developed as a commercial illustrator.
The turbulent 1960s ignited an impressive and wildly prolific time in Warhol’s life.  It is this period, extending into the early 1970s, which saw the production of many of Warhol’s most iconic works. "

Warhol Quote

The ideas I have for making my own Pop Art peice are to bring in my Bass Gutair into collage so I can take images of it in my Photography lesson, I also might bring in some soup cans if I can rememer too, so then I hzave something else to take images of instead of just one.
I also might take pictures of my headphones too, the reason I am taking such a risk with my Bass is because I want to make my work more orriginal instead of it looking the same or simmilar to that of the other student's work.
Hopefully, I'll be able to edit the picture pretty easily and won't have many issues with the editing softwear or the computer I'm using itself.... I hope that Photoshop doesn't crash as often as it sometimes likes to.
The main person who's inspired me to create my Pop Art project was Andy Warhol.

Pop Art- Evaluation

Pop Art Evaluation
·         Introduction – The purpose of this assignment was to create a piece of Pop Art, using images that we took earlier, I have made a contact sheet of the photos that I took; which is below:

found the photo shoot to be very productive, my photography skill may be slightly improved since I last did one.

The first picture I took ended up being very blurred due to the fact that I didn't have a very steady hand, the rest of them ended up being out of focus.... the photographs after that one were okay(ish) but I found that 90% of them were not in focus, the 6th photo took P1110038I was the best out of all the photos I took.

·        Research – The images that inspired me to create my Pop Art project are       below:

Pop Art first came about in America in about the 1950’s, Andy Warhol was the person who put Pop Art into the public, he first started creating Pop Art by taking pieces of newspaper and comic strips… then making the Pop Art effect by duplicating the images in the kind of way shown above in the images I found on the internet.
As I have mentioned above I researched Andy Warhol as one of the Artists that I was supposed to research as part of my assignment, I also researched Roy Lichtenstein to find out about some of the work that he was doing as part of Pop Art to find out what kind of work he did, some of the images that I found are below:

“Roy Lichtenstein was an American artist who defined the Pop Art aesthetic”
·         What were your ideas? Refer to your proposal – outline what it was you intended to produce.
What I intended to make was a Pop Art piece, made from the images I took of my Bass Guitar; hopefully I was going to be able to create my image pretty easily, without many crashes on Photoshop and hopefully I’d be able to make something that resembled Pop Art in some shape of form… I’d be able to use the “Warhol Effect” to make my image and hopefully the background and the guitar itself would change colour as I messed around with the filters and the “Hue” of the image.

·         Planning - How did you manage your time effectively? What considerations did you have to account for?
My time management would have to be pretty good, making sure that I got everything done on time, I could make a schedule so that I could remind myself what I was doing on a specific day… so that, again everything was on time and I didn’t have to deal with stress knowing that I was behind on work.

·         What considerations did you have to account for?
The things I might have had to take into consideration might have been; Crashes from Photoshop resulting in me not being able to complete my work on time; I’d have to get a laptop from the media office in collage so that I could continue my work, possibly at a better rate than if I was using a computer.
Also; if the worst should happen and I lose all my work; I’d have to restore the lost files from my backup drive to my main drive or if I lost all my information off my backup drive I’d have to make sure that all the information is updated and to make sure that this was the case even if my work hadn’t been lost in the first place.
If I should loose/break my Bass Guitar during transit, I’d have to carry something else with me to make sure that I still had something to do when all the other students were product shooting their items that they had brought in from home.
·         Photography. What did you have to take into account, ie, lighting, location, ISO and apature?
In the Photography part of the project, I found that the ideas that I had matched the ones I suggested in my proposal, unfortunately I did forget to bring in some soup cans from home… luckily, the friend I was working with kindly allowed me to sue some of their stuff so that my Bass Guitar wasn’t the only thing I took pictures of… I also managed to grab something our tutor had kindly brought in as well (games console controller).
As far as taking pictures was concerned, I didn’t make the best job… there were a few picture that were blurred and therefore they weren’t suitable for making into a Pop Art image, I should next time make sure to focus the camera to make that there aren’t any mistakes, but mainly the lighting was good for product shooting and the work surface was reasonably suitable for product shooting, but I did find that my Bass Guitar didn’t quite fit the A3 page I was given to shoot my products……

·         Editing techniques - What Photoshop skills/techniques did you employ? How were they used to enhance the shots you produced?

I used an ISO of 80, so that If the camera was still and didn’t wobble; my image of the guitar would have had a lot of detail, and may have been easier to turn into a Pop Art image, but instead; I didn’t hold the camera very still so as a result I lost a lot of quality, which I would have kept if I hadn’t have done that, the exposure of the camera was “1/8 sec” (one eighth of a second), which was a good exposure to have for that particular situation and the focal length was “6.00 mm (in 35mm: 34mm)”, which in my opinion was not good enough to make a decent image.

·     Photography analysis

From a photographer’s perspective, My work would be considered poor, most of my photos are blurred or out of focus, I could have kept the camera still or increased the ISO so that the shutter speed is faster; and so; the image wouldn’t be as blurred, as for the picture being out of focus, I need to make sure all the settings are what they need to be and also I need to check the camera to make sure it isn’t out of focus.

Apart from that, some of the images are reasonably good, there are a few that I should try and replicate as far as shooting is concerned, because they’re pretty good and are just about fit for purpose.

Pop Art Blog (research)

Research

   What was the time period?
Pop Art was in the 1950s (1950-1960s)
Where was it used? (detail an example)
America first, then Britain Later
Who were some of the famous artists(name them)
"The leading artists in Pop were Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Roy Hamilton, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg and Claes Oldenburg."
Source: http://www.artmovements.co.uk/popart.htm
Roy Lichtenstein is described as the most influential artist of the second half of the 21st century He first managed to paint comic strip images, advertisements and "crude" newspaper printings.
What are the features of a pop-art image?
One main feature that seems to be very frequent is stamping (or cloning) an image, but editing it so that it looks different (different filters like ultraviolet).
      What constitutes a pop-art image?
"Pop is everything art hasn't been for the last two decades. It's basically a U-turn back to a representational visual communication, moving at a break-away speed...Pop is a re-enlistment in the world...It is the American Dream, optimistic, generous and naïve."

How do you think they were created?
I think that someone just decided to be creative and started to create random things and eventually, it turned into a massive breakthrough,
Something that started off as a little idea, a spark of creativity, inspired by something loved by the person creating it.

      What/where could a pop-art image be used?
Pop Art could be used in advertisements because it is very good at catching the eye.
What product could use a pop-art image in its advertising?

What equipment do you think you will need? (list)

Ten Pop art images

The next thing I was set to do was to find a suitable lighting diagram for shooting the things I'd use for my Pop Art creations.
Make sure that you consider the following things whilst taking pictures of items.
Use a low ISO because you will capture a high level of detail.
Try to avoid shadow, by correctly lighting the item
Put the camera on a tripod for better stability.
Also a shallow depth of field (F4 setting).
All of these things need to be thought of when shooting my photos.
